Winter Septic Problems and How to Treat Them

The good news is that septic tanks don’t often freeze. Normally, there’s enough going on in a septic tank to keep the tank contents from freezing. But that doesn’t mean winter can’t throw a curveball or two at your septic system. If the unthinkable does happen, here are some steps you can take to restore your system to good working order.

Handling winter septic problems

The most likely freeze candidate in a septic system isn’t really the tank itself, but rather the line that connects the plumbing to the septic tank. This can (and will) happen if the line isn’t buried very deeply. To help insulate the line, you can use materials like straw (which is a very good insulator), leaves or extra dirt. Pile these on top of the line to help keep water penetration down. A blanket of snow is also a good insulator. If your line is very shallow, you may want to dig it up and add insulation to it.

You can also insulate over your drop box and leach field. Observe your leach field throughout the summer for signs of saturation or oversaturation. Visible water in the leach field is a sign of obvious problems. Address these during the warmer months! Do not ignore them; they will not go away!

If the line between the house and the tank does freeze, the best way to open it is by hydrojetting. Hydrojetting will melt any blockages in the line and get the liquid flowing again. If the line has been frozen for a long time, or you don’t know how long the line has been frozen, have the pipe inspected for damage before returning it to service. Ice can exert enormous pressure on a pipe, so you want to be sure that your pipe hasn’t fractured before you use it. If the inspection reveals signs of damage, replace the pipe immediately.

One last note: don’t attempt to open a frozen line chemically. Salt and anti-freeze will harm the biological action of your tank and will damage the land around your septic field.

Hydrojetting is a great way to open a frozen pipe, but it’s also messy. It’s not a DIY project! Call us at Clear Drain Cleaning and we can hydrojet your line safely, and video inspect it for damage at the same time. Highly recommend. Our appointment time was 8:00am Monday morning and Bruce showed up at 7:59. Awesome. And this was the morning after a snowstorm. He was polite, quick and professional. We had two clogged drains which he had cleaned out and left our house before 8:45. I would definitely use them again and suggest them to anyone who needs it.

Friendly, professional, and prompt. Adam fixed the backup and took the extra time to scope out the main flush with the camera to give us peace of mind that the pipes were in good shape.

we have been having issues with water and stuff backing up into our laundry room in the basement. Our company who maintains our septic (ASI) came out and told me to cancel the pumping company that I had coming later that morning. Ken (the ASI man) called Clear Drain for me and set up an appointment for us for 2 hours after he left. Ken told me how amazing this company is and how they will do such a thorough job and that they are priced very well for all that they do. Ken saved me a lot of money and heartache by sending this company out to my house. The gentleman who showed up was so kind, had a great sense of humor (even if he was faking it, I am sure he has heard all of the poop jokes there are to hear), he showed me exactly what needed to be fixed, told me what we can do to keep things moving until we can dig up the spot to our first septic tank, he discovered that we apparently have 2 septic tanks (that was a good laugh), marked in the yard where we needed to dig to have things fixed, told me what the company could do for us but never once pushed anything on me (which makes me want to call them again if we ever have issues). The kind man knew the exact type of tree that I had near the house, was able to tell me about the roots, how often we may or may not to have the pipes cleared, what to ask for in the future so we would know how often to have them cleared. I can't say enough good about these guys, although the issue sucks in the long run, he made me feel not so stressed about it, had me take a picture of the issue so I could show my husband so he would be able to see what is going on. (now I am rambling). I highly recommend this company. They seem to have amazing manners and an even better work ethic.
